Story Writing
1) Write a story using the following outline. Give the story a suitable title: (theft in Akbar’s court—valuable ornaments stolen—Emperor tries to find thief— unsuccessful—asks Birbal for help—Birbal asks for the chest from which valuables were stolen—puts his ear to the lid as if listening—says ‘trunk says thief has bright red spot on beard’—one servant quickly puts hand to his beard—thief caught)
BIRBAL’S TRICK
One day there was a theft in Akbar’s court. Some very valuable ornaments were stolen. The Emperor’s guards tried their best to catch the thief, but they were unsuccessful. Finally,
Akbar asked Birbal for help. Birbal asked for the trunk from which the valuables were stolen. In the presence of all the courtiers and servants, Birbal put his ear to the trunk as if he were listening to something.
Puzzled, Akbar asked him what he was doing. Birbal said, “The trunk just spoke to me. It said that the thief has a bright red spot on his beard.” One of the servants present quickly put his hand to his beard. Birbal pointed to him and
said, “There is your thief, Your Majesty.” The thief confessed to his crime and was punished. Smart Birbal was praised by everyone.
(2) Write a story in your own words about what must have happened to a hankerchief when it escaped from a clothesline.
THE GREAT ESCAPE
The handkerchief was tired of being clipped to the clothesline. Would it never taste freedom? It wriggled a bit—and 10! All of a sudden it was free, and flying gaily in the sky.
It fluttered a bit in the gentle breeze. It felt thrilled with its new freedom. Suddenly it landed near the feet of a little girl. “Look! What a pretty little handkerchief this is!” said the girl to her friend. “I really like it. I shall take it with me.”
She took it home with her, but her brother saw it, and snatched it from her. “I want it!” he screamed. The little girl began to cry.
Their mother came to see what had happened. She saw the handkerchief, and took it away from them. She left it on the table, where Nutty , their big cat, found it. He thought it was a toy for him and began to play with it.
So, now the handkerchief belongs to Nutty, who carries it with him everywhere and plays with it every day. The handkerchief is now looking very tired and worn out. It wonders whether it was better on the clothesline, after all!
