Letβs get the Scratch Jr cat to dance with a friend on a stage.
This chapter will show you how to set up and complete your first project.
πΉ Step 1οΈ: π± Open the App
- π₯οΈ This is the initial screen upon opening the Scratch Jr app.
- π Tap the π button located on the left side.
πΉ Step 2: Make a New Project
- πΌοΈ The home screen displays all saved Scratch Jr projects.
- π If it’s your first project, you’ll only see a plus sign.
- π Tap the plus sign to create a new project.
πΉ Step 3: Make the Cat Move!
- π Use the Scratch Jr editor to create animations, stories, and games.
- π±οΈ Drag blue arrow blocks to make the cat move.
- π± Tap the blue block to move the cat.
- π§© Combine blocks to create sequences of actions (scripts).
- π Experiment with blue motion blocks to make the cat dance.
- βΆοΈ Tap any block in the script to run it.
- π Congratulations on your first computer program!
πΉ Step 4: Use the Green Flag
- π Start your script with the Start on Green Flag block.
- π Tap the Green Flag button to run the script.
- π§© Learn about other triggering blocks for future projects.
Step 5: Add a Background
- πΌοΈ Choose a background from the selection.
- π Youβll see loads of backgrounds that you can choose from. For our dancing cat, letβs choose the theatre. Tap the check mark at the top to load it into your stage.
- π Congratulations, your cat is a star!
πΉ Step 6: Add Another Character
- β Letβs give your cat a friend.
- π₯ Tap the plus sign to add a character.
π Scroll Down the Page:
- π If you scroll down the page, youβll see many characters to choose from.
- π Tap the character you want to add.
- β Then tap the check mark to add it to your project.
- π§ We’ve chosen the penguin.
- π₯ Now there are two characters on the stage.
- π To the left of the stage is the character area, showing all characters in your project.
- π The new character always appears in the middle of the stage.
- ποΈ Use your finger to drag the character anywhere on the stage.
- π We’ve moved each of our characters to a spotlight.
- π Don’t panic if your cat’s script disappears.
- π± It’s still there in the cat’s programming area.
- π§ Now the screen displays the penguin’s programming area.
- π Each character has its own scripts.
- π Tap the cat in the character area to see its script.
- π Select the penguin again to work on its dance moves.
Step 7: Donβt Just Dance, Say Something!
- π¨οΈ Make the penguin speak before dancing.
- π£ Use the purple Say block for speech bubbles.
- π±οΈ Tap the purple button to access the looks blocks.
- π Drag the Say block to the programming area.
π£οΈ Change Text in Say Block:
- π€ Tap the word “hi” to open the keyboard.
- β¬ οΈ Use the backspace key to delete “hi”.
- ποΈ Type “Let’s dance!” or desired text for the penguin.
- πΆ Add blue motion blocks for the penguin’s dance.
- π Start the penguin’s script with a Start on Green Flag block.
Try it Out:
- π’ Tap the Green Flag button.
- π±π§ Scripts for both cat and penguin run simultaneously.
- π All scripts starting with a Start on Green Flag block activate.
- π Useful for larger projects with multiple characters.
Step 8: Add a Title
- π Display a title on the stage.
- β Tap the Add Text button.
- π·οΈ Type “Dance Party”.
- π Drag and place the title anywhere on the screen.
π Customize Title Appearance:
- π Use Change Size () to adjust the size.
- π¨ Use Change Color () to change the color.
- π Experiment to find the best fit for your stage.
- βΆοΈ Press Go to preview on the stage.
- βοΈ Tap on the words to edit the title again.
Step 9: Name Your Project
- π Give your project a name for easy identification.
- π» Tap the yellow tab in the top-right corner.
- βοΈ Delete the current name (Project 1) and type “Dance Party”.
- β Tap the check mark to confirm and return to the main screen.
π€ Share Your Project:
- π Send your project to others via Scratch Jr.

Step 10: Save Your Project
- πΎ Tap the Home button to save.
- π Your project won’t save until you return to the home screen.
- πΌοΈ Tap the project’s image to resume editing in Scratch Jr.
